How to Break Crackstone in Sandustry: Tool Guide

Crackstone in Sandustry shrugs off the Shovel and Gun. Unlock the Tier 4 Rocket Launcher for 2,000 Gold in Research, then blast the barrier open safely.

A pale Crackstone barrier sealing a deeper tunnel in Sandustry

To break Crackstone in Sandustry you need an advanced digging tool, because the two starter tools — the Shovel and the standard Gun — cannot damage it at all. The clearest officially confirmed method is the Rocket Launcher, researched in Tier 4 of the tech tree for 2,000 Gold; its explosions destroy hard terrain that smaller tools cannot touch, including Crackstone. If a pale wall underground ignores your shovel swings and your gunfire, that is intended material behavior, not a bug — mark the spot, keep earning Gold, and come back with explosives.

Why the Shovel and Gun do nothing

The official wiki states plainly that the Shovel and the Gun do not affect Crackstone. The distinction trips up new players because the Gun unlocks later than the Shovel and feels like an upgrade, yet it is still not strong enough for this material. No amount of digging-speed or firing-rate research changes the answer, so stop firing at the same tile and stop rebuilding your approach around those two tools.

The quick field test takes ten seconds: dig at the wall, then shoot it. A wall that ignores both is Crackstone. Recorded runs treat each confirmed wall as a waypoint — mark it on your mental map, keep digging elsewhere, and return once the launcher is researched. Players who learn this early stop wasting entire sessions on barriers they cannot yet open.

What Crackstone actually is

Explosives and energy tools breaking through a Crackstone barrier in Sandustry

Crackstone appears as a pale, unbreakable wall until you return with the Rocket Launcher or other explosive-class tool.

Crackstone is a progression gate, not a resource deposit. The official entry describes it as a hard, naturally generated solid with 1 HP that is neither burnable nor meltable, and it yields nothing when destroyed — no Gold, no Fluxite, no drop of any kind. Its only function is to hold territory closed until you arrive with the right class of tool, so the payout for breaking it is access to whatever sits behind it.

Because nothing drops, there is no reason to farm Crackstone or clear more of it than the route requires. Open the passage you need, and leave the rest of the wall standing. That also keeps your blast zones small, which matters when the wall borders liquids or your own machinery.

Unlocking the Rocket Launcher

The Rocket Launcher sits in Tier 4 of the Research tree at a cost of 2,000 Gold, per the current official Research page, and the dedicated Rocket Launcher page reports the same tier and cost. The Guns branch is the route there: the base Gun already replaces the Shovel for most day-to-day digging, so climbing the branch pays for itself in mining speed long before you fire a rocket. Earlier nodes in the branch are prerequisites, so the real unlock requirement is a Gold income steady enough to climb it without stalling.

The launcher ships with three rockets and reloads them automatically over time, so you do not need ammunition logistics for a single barrier. Fluxite upgrades such as the incendiary warhead and firing-rate improvements make it stronger, but a stock rocket is enough for Crackstone — those upgrades are conveniences, not requirements. If you are still building the Fluxite income that funds them, the finding Fluxite route covers the natural deposits.

Affording the 2,000 Gold

Two thousand Gold is the first real income check of the run, and the community answer has been consistent since the 2025 demo: build a bigger income, not a bigger savings discipline. A working Wet Sand and Shaker line, plus the burn-and-press second stream that turns residue into more Gold, refills the research cost quickly, while picking up loose nuggets by hand does not.

Two habits make the purchase painless. Keep your Gold boxed and make the box oversized, because runs routinely overflow small containers and lose counting time to rebuilding. And finish the early factory steps of a getting started route before rushing the Guns branch — the Gold that buys the launcher comes from shaking and pressing, not from the launcher itself.

Firing the shot safely

Rockets reshape terrain indiscriminately. The blast affects a wide, roughly circular area, so aim at a solid surface near the Crackstone and let the rocket collide; the explosion opens the wall plus everything beside and behind it. Clear valuable resources and delicate factory structures out of the blast zone before firing, and open only the route you need rather than hollowing the entire chamber.

The classic disaster is firing near a water reservoir perched above lava works: the impact flashes water to steam, the steam condenses and falls back as rain, and the rain extinguishes lava pits you spent real time building. Shooting downward whenever the geometry allows avoids most stray steam. After the breach, contain the new edge before returning to production — opening a route can join a water pocket, a lava cave, or a loose-material slope directly to your base.

Other tools that break Crackstone

The Rocket Launcher is the documented method, but it is not the only one. The official Crackstone page states that every digging tool other than the Shovel and the Gun can destroy Crackstone, and it lists the Drill, Laser, and Void Gun as effective advanced options. The wiki does not rank them by speed, energy use, or collateral damage on that page, so verify a tool's current description before treating it as a better fit for a specific factory layout.

What waits behind the barrier

The reward for breaking Crackstone is territory. A demo-era player thread describes a Crackstone barrier sealing the right edge of the map, with additional areas — and the resources inside them — opening once it fell; in Early Access the sealed pockets appear along the deep routes and are where artifact hunting begins. The puzzles behind them can alter how your mining works, so keep the artifacts guide handy for what comes next.

Two practical notes for the moment itself: step a few tiles in and light the area before celebrating, because the pockets are dark and deep, and descending without a light or grapple plan is how fresh openings turn into rescues. And if a guide told you a gun breaks something called "shatterstone," treat that as a different block — no official source equates the names, and the official Crackstone entry rules out non-explosive Gun damage explicitly.

Troubleshooting

  • Shovel does nothing: expected; it cannot affect Crackstone.
  • Gun does nothing: expected; it also cannot affect Crackstone.
  • Launcher missing from Research: it lives in Tier 4 behind earlier Guns-branch nodes; keep climbing with Gold income.
  • Price looks wrong: research costs have moved between demo and Early Access builds. Trust the in-game research menu, never a screenshot or a fan-site figure.
  • Broke it and got nothing: working as intended. The block drops nothing; the territory behind it is the reward.

  • Information vintage: Sandustry Early Access v0.5.x (Update #2, August 19, 2026), developer Lantto Games, publisher Hooded Horse; sources checked August 2026.
  • Tool restrictions, the 1 HP and no-yield properties, the Tier 4 / 2,000 Gold research placement, and the Drill, Laser, and Void Gun options are cited from the official wiki's Crackstone, Rocket Launcher, and Research pages (Crackstone, Rocket Launcher, Research); the direct wiki pages were bot-blocked when collected, so these details pass through fan guides that quote them.
  • The right-edge barrier and the "how do I afford 2,000 Gold" exchange come from a February 2025 demo-era Steam thread, included as labeled demo history.
  • The claim that sealed Early Access pockets are where artifact hunting begins is from community guide material — player reports, not independently verified against in-game v0.5.5 content.
